"10 and 2," The Great Flood of '05, or How I Cheated Death Three Times in One Day

After another fabulous writing class tonight I headed to Grumpys, ran, actually, in the rain for kick ass conversation, beer, and tator tots. The stalled out car up to its bumper in H2O should have given me a clue, but I wasn't prepared for an hour and 15 minute drive home. But while I was driving, I thought about a little life tidbit I was given years ago.

10 and 2.

For those of you who didn't retain much from your 15th year on earth, "10 and 2" are the hand/clock positions drivers should have on the steering wheel. Supposedly this is how you have the most control. I've carried this with me and have always gone back to 10 and 2 when driving in icky weather. Tonight it made me think, though, how often we're given tried-and-true life secrets. 10 and 2 works, and it was a completely free piece of information that has led me down the life path instead of the death path countless times in my life. I know, I know, I'm getting deeply philosophical over drivers ed. Just consider it, that's all I ask.

The other thing I thought about was how it is that I, a suburban average American female, was faced with death twice today. Three times if you include the shower hassle, which I will because I can. A gas leak and a flood. Shit, man. I'm not in Louisiana, or Houston, I'm in Shakopee-freaken-Minnesota.

I'm all tuckered out now. It's exhausting sometimes just to keep yourself alive.
