I decided that instead of Sex and the City to escape my icky mood I would turn to George Saunders and my in-such-sad-shape book goal. So, I picked up The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil.
This novella is, well, it's just weird. But good weird. Amazing weird. Like the kind of weird that you wish you could write and you think you probably could because George made it look so easy but if you sat down and tried to write it you would fail miserably.
I wouldn't exactly call it "futuristic"--I'd put it now but in a parallel universe of sorts. There are three countries involved and the stories revolves around this creature named Phil who decides he wants to be more powerful and takes advantage of a smaller country and things all go crazy.
I'm not explaining this well.
Suffice to say, it's an amazing book and it's a short read, and one that you should definitely pick up. It has a sense of humor and a tragic sense of honesty to it that is hard to get across in "human" books.

I have his Pastoralia, but I haven't read it yet.
That's one of my favorite collections. Read Sea Oak, like tonight. You'll love it; George's writing is just so delightfully crazy.
